Las Hermanas de Sion en Costa Rica: fundamentos para la comprensión de su actividad apostólica entre 1945-1965

Abstract

El presente trabajo pretende ser básico y exploratorio, inscribiéndose así dentro del proyecto general de la investigación de la Escuela Ecuménica de la Universidad Nacional, Heredia. Podría contribuir en el futuro a poner de relieve un modo de presencia religiosa, comunitaria, femenina, en diferentes campos pastorales, en los que hasta hace poco tradicionalmente no entraban las mujeres, especialmente entre los más pobres. Hasta el momento nadie en el país ha intentado escribir la historia de las Hermanas de Sión en Costa Rica, excepto un pequeño folleto - “sin autor”- con algunos datos escrito con motivo del centenario de la llegada de Sión a Costa Rica. El folleto se llama: “Sión, 100 años, lo conoces?” Se espera aclarar y hacer resaltar el supuesto aporte que las hermanas dieron al país entre los años 1945 y 1965. Se dice “al país” y no solo a la Iglesia, porque se verá, su acción parece haber sido muy concreta y de vanguardia en esa época, un avance en la concepción de la vida religiosa femenina, antes de Vaticano II, antes de la reunión de Medellín en 1968 y de Puebla en 1979. Se quiere mostrar que las hermanas saltaron formas rígidas tradicionales, para "acomodarse" y dar respuestas nuevas a viejas necesidades, dando testimonio de un avance en la manera de concebir el rol de la mujer en la Iglesia y en la sociedad. En el proceso se recurrió a documentos de la época, guardados en archivos. Esto permitió rescatarlos para colaborar así en la elaboración de trabajos futuros, más amplios, en el campo la Historia de la Iglesia en Costa Rica.

The present work is intended to be basic and exploratory, and thus is part of the general research project of the Ecumenical School of the National University, Heredia. It could contribute in the future to highlight a mode of religious, community, and feminine presence in different pastoral fields, which until recently were not traditionally entered by women, especially among the poorest. So far no one in the country has tried to write the history of the Sisters of Sion in Costa Rica, except for a small booklet - "without an author" - with some data written on the occasion of the centenary of Sion's arrival in Costa Rica. The booklet is called: "Sion, 100 years, do you know it? It hopes to clarify and highlight the supposed contribution that the sisters gave to the country between 1945 and 1965. It is said "to the country" and not only to the Church, because it will be seen, their action seems to have been very concrete and avant-garde at that time, an advance in the conception of female religious life, before Vatican II, before the meeting in Medellin in 1968 and Puebla in 1979. It is intended to show that the sisters jumped over traditional rigid forms, to "accommodate" and give new answers to old needs, giving witness to an advance in the way of conceiving the role of women in the Church and in society. In the process, documents of the time, kept in archives, were used. This made it possible to rescue them in order to collaborate in the elaboration of future, more extensive works in the field of the History of the Church in Costa Rica.
