CONOA, a project to collect autobiographies of workers and artisans, is formulated as a “structural complement” to the CONAUCA project. Through these two contests, the School of Planning and Social Promotion intends to obtain what has been called a first “census” of the superstructure of the working class in Costa Rica. Formulated as a contest of workers and artisans, CONOA should cover a series of sectors ranging from banana, sugar cane and coffee workers, to workers and artisans in the construction industry, services and others. However, due to the scarcity of both human and economic resources available to the project, the population to be taken into account has had to be greatly reduced. The fundamental criterion used for this delimitation was the proximity and geographic agglomeration of certain sectors of workers and artisans in the central urban area of the country. The project will be limited to those sectors of workers and artisans in industry, construction and services that are located in what has been called the Expanded Metropolitan Area.
