Abstract

En 1946 inicia el programa de alimentación complementaria para beneficio de personas menores de edad y sus madres. Para mediados de ese mismo año, pediatras nacionales determinan la desnutrición como un problema de salud pública; por ende, en 1950 el Ministerio de Salubridad, en convenio con el Fondo de Naciones Unidas para la Infancia (UNICEF), iniciaron un programa de alimentación en beneficio de la niñez y las madres embarazadas y en proceso de lactancia. Siendo este la base para la creación del Departamento de Nutrición del Ministerio de Salubridad. En el 2019, la Dirección del CEN CINAI atiende miles de beneficiarias y beneficiarios, además cuenta con cientos de establecimientos. A mediados del 2019 el CEN CINAI atiende alrededor de 172 000 beneficiarias y beneficiarios, entre bebés, preescolares, escolares, madres embarazadas y en proceso de lactancia; entre las beneficiarias y los beneficiarios se encuentran indígenas de las regiones Brunca, Huetar Atlántica y Huetar Norte del país. Para atender a los clientes disponen de 620 establecimientos contando CEN CINAI, CENCE (Centro de Educación y Nutrición con Comedor escolar) y Puestos de Distribución alrededor del país. (Villalobos, 2011). El CEN CINAI por medio de servicios en beneficio de la niñez pretende promover el desarrollo total del país. La misión del CEN CINAI, desde su creación hasta a inicios del 2019, es favorecer a las familias con mujer gestante o familias con niñas o niños menores de 13 años brindándoles la oportunidad de acceder a servicios de salud en nutrición, servicios de atención y protección de la niñez; con el fin de favorecer el desarrollo infantil y el desarrollo integral del país.
