Resumen
El presente informe reporta las experiencias de la pasantía realizada durante los meses de junio, julio y agosto del 2003 en la Universidad de California, Davis, en las áreas de cirugía equina, anestesia y radiología de especies mayores. Durante este período se realizó una bitácora, la cual consta del archivo completo de los animales que ingresaban al hospital para un posterior estudio y análisis estadístico.
Se participó en un total de 222 casos, los cuales se distribuyen de la siguiente manera: un 51% corresponde a radiología, un 28% a cirugía y un 21% a anestesia.
Los datos más relevantes de cada animal, áreas y sistemas afectados, protocolos anestésicos y técnicas utilizadas son analizados. Por último, se presentan tres de los casos observados, los cuales fueron atendidos en los departamentos visitados y evidencian la forma de trabajo de la Universidad de California. Además, se profundiza en cada diagnóstico y se discute la resolución de estos.
The present report reviews the experiences of my externship at the University of California, Davis, from June to August, 2003. The externship included equine surgery, large animal anesthesia and radiology rotations. During this period, a daily record was kept with the complete information of each of the animals that entered the hospital for a subsequent statistical analysis. A total of 222 patients were included in the medical files. They were distributed and treated in the following ways: 51% were admitted into radiology, 28% were seen by the equine surgery team and 21% of these animals underwent general anesthesia. The affected areas and body systems, in addition to the anesthetic protocols used in the University are described and analyzed. Finally, three cases were chosen for further evaluation. Included is a complete discussion of the diagnosis, treatment and resolution of these three cases, as a way to illustrate the Hospital’s procedures and working systems.
