Pasantía en medicina interna, cuidados críticos y cirugía de tejidos blandos en especies menores, en el Hospital Veterinario Intensivet (HVI) y Clínica Veterinaria Machado (CVM), Costa Rica

Resumen
Se realizó una pasantía enfocada en pacientes felinos y caninos en las áreas de medicina interna, cuidados críticos y cirugía de tejidos blandos en el Hospital Veterinario INTENSIVET (HVI) y en la Clínica Veterinaria Machado (CVM), durante cuatro semanas en cada una, para un tiempo efectivo de ocho semanas, con un total de 352 horas. En el transcurso de la pasantía se participó en 120 casos. En HVI se atendieron 78 pacientes y en CVM 42 pacientes. En HVI los principales motivos de consulta fueron gastrointestinales tales como vómito y diarrea con un 40% de afluencia de la totalidad de casos, mientras que en CVM fueron cardiorrespiratorios y se presentaron pacientes disneicos y cardiópatas con un 43% de casos. En ambos centros se atendieron más caninos machos que hembras; en HVI se atendieron 40 (33%) machos y 29 (25%) hembras, mientras que en CVM se atendieron 23 (19%) machos y 19 (16%) hembras. Con respecto a felinos, en HVI fueron seis machos y tres hembras. La raza predominante en caninos fue el French Poodle con un 16%, en segundo lugar el Chihuahua con 6% y en tercer lugar el Schnauzer con 5%. En estado reproductivo la mayoría de los pacientes caninos y felinos de ambas veterinarias estaban castrados del total de 120 (100%), 77 (64%) estaban castrados y 43 (36%) enteros. Con respecto a las cirugías se participó en un total de 26 casos, de los cuales 20 correspondieron a cirugía de tejidos blandos y seis de ortopedia. Se realizaron nodulectomías cutáneas y subcutáneas, otohematomas, rinoplastias, entre otras. En el periodo enfocado en emergencias, se participó en la atención de 32 casos en total, de los cuales 21 (66%) fueron de emergencias atraumáticas y 11 (34%) fueron de emergencias traumáticas. Además, se ampliaron y desarrollaron conocimientos y habilidades en consulta clínica, cuidados críticos, tratamientos, implementación e interpretación de pruebas diagnósticas y asistencia en pre, trans y posquirúrgico
An internship focused on feline and canine patients in the areas of internal medicine, critical care and soft tissue surgery was carried out at the INTENSIVET Veterinary Hospital (HVI) and at Machado Veterinary Clinic (CVM), for a period of four weeks in each and an effective time of eight weeks, with a total of 352 hours. During the internship, 120 cases were attended. In HVI, 78 patients were treated and in CVM, 42 patients. In HVI, the main reasons for visit were gastrointestinal, such as vomiting and diarrhea, while in CVM, they were cardio-respiratory, and dyspneic and cardiac patients treated. In both centers, more males than females were attended; in HVI, 40 (33%) male dogs and 29 (25%) females were treated, while in CVM 23 (19%) males and 19 (16%) females were treated. Regarding the cats, in HVI there were six males and three females. The predominant breed in canines was the French Poodle (16%), in second place the Chihuahua (6%) and in third place the Schnauzer (5%) In reproductive status, most of the canine and feline patients from both veterinarians were neutered of the total of 120 (100%), 77 (64%) were neutered and 43 (36%) unneutered. Regarding surgeries, a total of 26 cases were participated, of which 20 corresponded to soft tissue surgery and six to orthopedics. Cutaneous and subcutaneous nodulectomies, otohematomas, rhinoplasty, among others, were performed. In the period focused on emergencies, we participated in the care of a total of 32 cases, of which 21 (66%) were atraumatic emergencies and 11 (34%) were traumatic emergencies. In addition, skills in clinical consultation, critical care, treatments, implementation and interpretation of diagnostic tests and assistance in pre, intra and post-surgery were expanded and developed.
