This research seminar emphasizes the analysis of the implementation of a bioeconomy model in the Costa Rican coffee sector, using Cooperativa de Caficultores y Servicios Múltiples de Tarrazú (CoopeTarrazú) as a case study. The relevance of the seminar results from exploring the bioeconomy as an alternative to strengthen coffee production, highlighting its impact on the production of final products, creation processes in the value chain, increasing productivity and the integration of productive sectors. During the research, the exploration of the bioeconomy and value chains is emphasized in the specific context of the Costa Rican coffee sector, where the focus covers general aspects and specific contributions of the bioeconomy, including opportunities and challenges arising from the study of selected bioeconomic products from CoopeTarrazú, prioritizing three products at different stages of their life cycle to address different dimensions of the bioeconomy. In this aspect, the selection of these products is based on the established criteria by the National Bioeconomy Strategy, considering the conservation, use and transformation of biological resources, knowledge of resources and biological processes, and the application of technology; where the chosen products are aligned with the fundamental axes of the bioeconomy, demonstrating CoopeTarrazú's strategy to address key aspects of sustainability and the bioeconomy. In summary, the research proves that the implementation of the bioeconomy in the coffee sector, exemplified by CoopeTarrazú, is an effective strategy to strengthen production, where it is evident that the bioeconomy encourage innovation in value chains, improves productivity and competitiveness, highlighting the creation of sustainable products from coffee residues. This new productive paradigm generates competitive advantages by diversifying the product portfolio and using biological resources efficiently, showing environmental benefits and the ability to generate products differentiated and profitable in the market.
