During the last two decades, the country has promoted economic and social development policies aimed at improving the standard of living of the population. As is well known, in order to establish plans and programs that help improve the “social gap”, it is necessary to know as accurately as possible the reality in which Costa Rican families live, so that the plans meet their needs and collaborate in the solution of existing plans. In this sense, the surveys carried out by IDESPO offer a broader dimension, because they provide information on the structure of households, cultural aspects and attitudes, family decision-making, attitude towards children, expectations towards marriage, etc., which allow reconstructing and classifying families according to certain criteria that try to reflect these aspects in the typologies elaborated in this report. This is precisely the basic objective of this research report, to present a typology of the Costa Rican family derived from some data collected in two surveys: “Some psychological and socioeconomic factors that influence fertility” and “The fertility of Costa Rican men”, carried out by IDESPO in 1977 and 1979 respectively.
