This work describes an internship in buiatrics of dairy cattle at the firm HCS Herdenmagement Consulting Service in Germany. It lasted for three months (19 April to 7 July 2017) and 71 programmed and emergency visits to 39 dairy farms in Germany and Italy. Herd health, nutrition, reproductive control, internal medicine and surgery consultations were performed. There were 63 visits to 31 herds in Germany and eight visits to eight herds in Italy. The work was divided in five chronological stages: herd health and nutrition assessment in Germany, internal medicine and reproductive control assessment in Germany, a stay in three German farms to assist their work processes, herd health and nutrition assessment in Italy and then a combination of herd health, nutrition and reproductive control in German farms. Most consultations were related to gynecological control (36 consultations in 19 herds), herd health (31 consultations in 19 herds), and nutritional assessment (30 consultations in 16 herds). In addition, several consultations on internal medicine, surgery and laboratory diagnosis were performed. An important difference was found about the generation of productive, economic and nutritional information in the German and Italian herds compared with the information generated in Costa Rica. In addition, a new surgical technique to left abomasum displacement was learned and some strategies related to added value for dairy products were observed, which are readily applicable to our country´s conditions.
