DENOMINACIÓN DE ORIGEN DEL MAÍZ PUJAGUA DE NICOYA: FACTIBILIDAD Y OPORTUNIDADES PARA LA REGIÓN CHOROTEGA

Abstract

El presente documento desarrolla un análisis sobre la viabilidad del maíz pujagua de Nicoya en obtener una denominación de origen. El objetivo principal se enfoca en estudiar las características innatas del producto agrícola a nivel técnico y social, especialmente muestras realizas durante el periodo comprendido entre 2017 y 2020, esto a fin de identificar el potencial comercial de la Región Chorotega y, consecuentemente, formular una estrategia de aprovechamiento, así como para la determinación de su incidencia en desarrollo regional. La metodología consiste principalmente en una revisión documental, especialmente relacionado con el origen geográfico, antecedentes históricos y vínculo social del maíz pujagua en Costa Rica, particularmente en Nicoya, así como en la caracterización de las propiedades científicas en términos fenológicas, morfológicas, fisicoquímicas, y organolépticas; asimismo implica el desarrollo de entrevistas y opinión a expertos.

En donde el resultado principal versa sobre determinar si el producto agrícola en cuestión cumple no solo con los criterios establecidos a nivel internacional por el Acuerdo de Lisboa, y en consecuencia por la Ley de Marcas y Otros Signos Distintivos, N° 7978 en Costa Rica en cuanto a indicaciones geográficas, sino también si responde a las nuevas demandas de consumo internacional orientadas a productos con valor agregado, que además de satisfacer a una necesidad real, incipiente y racional, también aumente su alcance e incluso narrativa.

The following document analyzes the feasibility of obtaining an Appellation of Origin for Pujagua maize from Nicoya. The primary objective is to examine the crop's inherent technical and social characteristics, drawing particularly on studies conducted between 2017 and 2020, in order to identify its potential for achieving this recognition and to explore the product's commercial potential for the development of the Chorotega Region. On that basis, the study formulates a strategy for leveraging the product's distinctive attributes while evaluating its potential contribution to regional development. The methodology consists mainly of a documentary review addressing the geographical origin, historical background, and social significance of Pujagua maize in Costa Rica, particularly in Nicoya, along with a characterization of its phenological, morphological, physicochemical, and organoleptic properties; it is further complemented by expert interviews and consultations.

The main outcome of the study is to determine whether Pujagua maize meets not only the international criteria established under the Lisbon Agreement and, consequently, the provisions governing geographical indications under Costa Rica's Trademark and Other Distinctive Signs Law (Law No. 7978), but also the evolving demands of international markets for value-added goods, markets that increasingly call for products that satisfy genuine consumer needs while offering a distinctive identity, enhanced market reach, and a compelling cultural narrative.
