This research corresponds to the seminar report. Its objective was to investigate the factors that affect the levels of security in the children's centers of circuits 01 and 06, in addition to finding out if the necessary human, material and economic elements are in place. In addition, to analyze the degree of knowledge on the subject of child safety of the teaching and administrative staff of the institutions studied. The theoretical bases of this study are divided into eight topics, which are: child development; child accidents; environmental context, infrastructure, human resources; level of training, didactic material and economic factor. The type of research used is considered descriptive and is applied in three public kindergartens located in the canton of Pérez Zeledón, to a sample of eleven children, nine teachers, three directors, eleven parents, six members of the Board of Education and six members of the School Board of the respective institutions during 2003. The information was collected by means of five instruments: a participant observation, two interviews, a questionnaire and a focus group. A descriptive statistical analysis was carried out, which means that tables containing simple frequencies and percentages were drawn up. This type of analysis was performed on the non-participant observation guide and the questionnaire. Matrices were also prepared to record the information obtained from the interviews and the focus group. A qualitative analysis of the information was also carried out through a data triangulation with which the data obtained from the different levels of the instruments were compared. At the end of the study, the following conclusions were reached: of the three institutions observed, only one has the minimum safety standards in its facilities and in the training of its personnel to deal with an emergency situation. The Ministry of Education does not consider security issues in the schools when preparing its annual plan. The opinion of parents is not considered on many occasions by the teaching and administrative staff. Among the main recommendations, the following are suggested: greater participation in security training. Organize and carry out conferences to raise awareness about the importance of security in the schools their children attend. That the Ministry of Public Education provide greater support and resources to principals and teachers.
