Pestiviruses are capable of infecting a wide range of cloven-hoofed animals. Currently, the Pestivirus genus includes bovine viral diarrhea virus 1 (BVDV-1) and 2 (BVDV-2), border disease virus (BDV), and classical swine fever virus (CSFV). A new species of bovine pestivirus, HoBi virus or BVDV-3, was recently discovered. BVDV-1, BVDV-2 and BDV are able to cross the interspecies barrier and infect a wide range of hosts, whereas CSFV infects only domestic pigs and wild boar. The host range of HoBi virus is still unknown, although data suggest a greater adaptation of this virus to ruminants than to swine. In Costa Rica, 25% of samples from a cattle serum bank (811/3200) tested seropositive for BVDV in 1995, while samples collected from dairy herds between 1987 and 2006 determined the presence of a single genogroup, BVDV-1b, in the isolates. To date, there are no reports of BVDV circulation in sheep in Costa Rica.
