María Josefa García Granados, known as Pepita,is an outstanding character of the 1821 pro-independence Guatemala movement. This essay aims to show that Pepita, as a first political and feminist token, holds an historical leading role due to her literary skills as well as for the activism and social awareness she arose throughout her plays and the newspapers and bulletins she edited. Pepita broke the restrictions of her times imposed by the patriarchal society regarding female political participation in the public affairs of the country. I propose that understanding her public, literary and female works can allows us to set a plot between the historical and political reality of the Central American and Latin American pro-independence movements. Moreover, it can allow us to understand the processes of circulation of ideas taking as a point of departure the materiality of texts, the hegemonic discourses and rationalities.
