Characterization of PRRSV and dynamics of the virus in swine farms in Costa Rica

Abstract

The Porcine ReproducPve and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) was first recognized clinically in the EU in 1987, and thereaYer it spread through Europe and America. The virus has two genotypes: the type 1 which is predominant in Europe (EU) and the type 2 which is predominant in North America and Asia (NA). Objec*ve The aim of this study was to evaluate the dynamics of PRRSV in pig farms, to determine if both genotypes of PRRS virus are circulaPng, and to esPmate its prevalence in pig farms of Costa Rica

El Síndrome Respiratorio y Reproductivo Porcino (PRRS) fue reconocido clínicamente por primera vez en la UE en 1987, y posteriormente se extendió por Europa y América. El virus tiene dos genotipos: el tipo 1, que predomina en Europa (UE), y el tipo 2, que predomina en Norteamérica y Asia (NA). Objetivo El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la dinámica del PRRSV en granjas porcinas, determinar si circulan ambos genotipos del virus del PRRS y estimar su prevalencia en granjas porcinas de Costa Rica.
