During this project four analgesic protocols were developed: tramadol (protocol 1), tramadol with 2% epidural lidocaine (protocol 2), tramadol with 2% epidural lidocaine plus ketamine (protocol 3), and butorphanol (protocol 4), and were applied in ovariohysterectomy surgeries in 48 bitches, whose breed was undefined, their age were between 1 to 6 years old and whose weight ranged from 9.5 to 20.5 Kg. They were divided randomly in 4 groups of 12 sujects. There was no significant difference in pain control during surgery among the four protocols, however, there were trends that may suggest a greater analgesic effect with protocols 3 and 4. Time in minutes between the first dose of ketamine-midazolam (K-M) and the first additional dose was also determined, with a result of 5.80 min with protocol 1, 8.22 min with protocol 2, 8.40 min with protocol 3 y 11.17 min with protocol 4. Finally, measurements of time until the first additional dose of K-M were compared for the four protocols to determine if there were significant differences among them, obtaining a highly significant difference (P<0.01) for butorfanol vs. tramadol and a significant difference (P<0.05) for butorfanol vs. tramadol with 2% epidural lidocaine.
