In 2009, the invasion of lionfish was reported in the reefs of the Southern Caribbean of Costa Rica, which are supposed to affect the quality of the ecosystems. The invasive population of lionfish was evaluated, genetic sequencing and environmental education to propose recommendations for its management. The densities were 62 and 65 ind/ ha in 2011 and 2013 in Perezoso (PNC), 81 and 90 ind/ha in Puerto Viejo, of 161 and 166 ind/ha in Manzanillo and 111 ind/ha on Uvita Island. The relative abundance was 4.7 in Puerto Viejo; 2.4 in Cocles; 3.1 in Punta Uva; 2.1 in Manzanillo and 7.2 in Punta Mona for 2010. For 2011-2012, in Manzanillo it was 2.7; Cahuita 2.9; Uvita Island of 2.8 Puerto Viejo of 2.8 and 2.1 in Punta Mona.
