The cultivation of Tectona grandis can be considered an excellent economic investment, but could be affected by environmental events in recent years, leading to increased investor uncertainty. However, it could be affected by the environmental events of recent years, leading to increased uncertainty among investors. By creating forest insurance, the National Insurance Institute (INS) aims to encourage producers to insure against catastrophic events, such as those caused by high winds and forest fires. The insurance is intended to have a cost that is affordable for producers and that does not increase the costs of plantation establishment. INS will offer two types of insurance with different insurance categories for different types of producers, offering a product for plantation establishment and for established plantations. It is expected that with the opening of an insurance that covers forestry plantations against possible risks such as fire or overturning due to strong winds, there will be a decrease in uncertainty. Although insurance is not capable of eradicating all the risks that a crop presents, it could be taken into account when planning to make an investment, which guarantees investors, as long as the coverage allows it, to recover their investment in catastrophic cases. Costa Rica has a great potential for reforestation, and given the scarcity of timber in the national and world markets, the support provided by forest insurance should be a stimulus for the forestry sector. Tectona grandis is a species that when well managed presents low risks and higher value than other species commonly used in forestry plantations, so if possible it should be planted to a greater extent, improving the supply and benefiting the forestry sector that urgently needs a stimulus to continue producing quality goods.
