Una mirada a la cotidianidad de Mujeres Afrodescendientes en Costa Rica: primera mitad del siglo XX

Abstract

El 2021 es un año especial para los países centroamericanos porque se conmemora el bicentenario de la independencia de España. Entre muchos círculos académicos se marcó esta fecha con discusiones en forma de investigaciones, y congresos que se dieron a la tarea de acercarse a esta memoria de forma crítica analizando las exclusiones del pasado y como estas se perpetuaron a lo largo de doscientos años. Para el caso de Costa Rica una de las exclusiones dentro de la historiografía nacional es la presencia y contribución de las personas afrodescendientes y en forma particular el de las mujeres. El principal objetivo de este artículo es visibilizar algunas mujeres afrodescendientes viviendo en Costa Rica durante el siglo XX analizando como la construcción de género traída de las islas caribeñas durante el siglo XIX fue fusionado en la sociedad migrante del siglo XX. Para el análisis se utilizando fuentes primarias encontradas en la prensa del siglo XX para dilucidar como navegaron las mujeres inmigrantes afrocaribeñas la sociedad machista y racista costarricense. El segundo objetivo es contribuir con la declaración del Decenio Internacional del Afrodescendiente bajo el tema Afrodescendientes: reconocimiento, justicia y desarrollo 2014-2024, con investigaciones enfocadas en el pueblo afro costarricense.

2021 is a special year for the Central American countries because the bicentennial of independence from Spain is commemorated. Among many academic circles, this date was marked with discussions in the form of investigations, and congresses that were given the task of approaching this memory critically, analyzing the exclusions of the past and how they were perpetuated over two hundred years. In the case of Costa Rica, one of the exclusions within the national historiography is the presence and contribution of Afro-descendants, and particularly that of women. The main objective of this article is to make visible some Afro-descendant women living in Costa Rica during the 20th century, analyzing how the construction of gender brought from the Caribbean islands during the 19th century was fused into the migrant society of the 20th century. For the analysis, primary sources found in the 20th century press were used to elucidate how Afro-Caribbean immigrant women navigated the macho and racist Costa Rican society. The second objective is to contribute to the declaration of the International Decade for People of African Descent under the theme Afro-descendants: recognition, justice and development 2014-2024, with research focused on the Afro-Costa Rican people.
