The work “Improving the preparatory capacities for innovation management in Information and Communication Technology SMEs through a self-assessment tool” documents the design process of a self-assessment tool for digital technology companies affiliated with the Costa Rican Chamber of Information and Communication Technologies. It includes a conceptual framework on innovation and identifies the necessary preparatory capacities in the areas of general knowledge, human factors, organizational factors, and production and market factors. This is based primarily on the proposal by Antonio Hidalgo and incorporates contributions from the Innovation Diagnostic Diamond methodology and the Confederation of Business Owners of Málaga. These elements of bibliographic research were complemented by interviews with specialists in innovation in Costa Rica and in the management of technology companies. The design of the items and the definition of scores emerged from the integration of these processes.
The tool was tested with seven companies affiliated with CAMTIC, which completed the tool and provided interviews to delve deeper into the details of their management, as well as to receive feedback on the design. These tests resulted in some minor corrections that were implemented. Overall, the instrument was well received by the sample. The company managers considered it a useful tool for companies that are starting out, lack experience, or do not have the necessary stability to assume the investment costs in training, research, and development that could lead to innovations.
