In its 32nd edition, Ístmica an issue marked by the simultaneous strangeness and intimacy so often found in exile takes refuge in a postcard sent sixty years ago by Roque Dalton and wanders into a Salvadoran childhood one violated, or perhaps mythic that was subsequently lost to Fidel Castro’s revolution. Yet, it also projects the visual grammar of Central American memory onto its recollections and feels the Caribbean’s insular nature upon a woman’s skin, all while dreaming of the tiles her grandparents once walked upon in Havana. Upon waking, the roar of the flames that devastated the Guatemala of Isabel de los Ángeles Ruano will still be there.
