The first is to provide a synthetic approach to the main existing theories in International Relations. To this end, the authors of the different chapters have concentrated on establishing the central postulates of these theories and have indicated the main exponents, in order to review the central axes of thought in the discipline. From this perspective, liberalism, structural realism, the theory of international regimes, neoinstitutionalism, complex interdependence, constructivism, critical theories, the English School and feminist theories have been addressed. Additionally, specific chapters on soft power, Foreign Policy Analysis and International Political Economy have been incorporated. The second objective has been to consider the empirical application of these theories to Costa Rican cases. It is for this reason that the book covers some of the most important events of the country's recent foreign policy, but also others that are not so well known and that reflect how the country's foreign relations constitute an open field for research and analysis. In this line, the book also wishes to encourage the study of phenomena linked to Costa Rica, as a small and unarmed state that defies conventional theoretical reasoning. For this purpose, and as cases of empirical application of the theories, concrete events such as Costa Rica's participation during the Second Gulf War, the establishment of diplomatic relations between Costa Rica and the People's Republic of China, the process of approval of the Escazu Agreement, the Crucitas case and the environmental issue, and the Costa Rican position in the face of the impeachment trial faced by Dilma Rousseff in Brazil, among others, are taken as cases of empirical application of the theories.
