This study is the result of field research on Nicaraguan labor migration into banana plantations in the region of Sarapiquí Costa Rica. The research project studied the various dimensions that involve migration processes, while at the same time considered the international context as generator of such development. Thus, the analysis looks into migration to Costa Rica as an immediate consequence of high unemployment rates in Nicaragua and the positive attraction of the Sarapiquí region on that population through the incentives of labor demand and better living conditions. The study also takes into consideration the international economic position of both the region and the migrants in the global economy, that is an exporting region of perishable consumption commodities and a subaltern class of labor workers. The research, also highlights the importance of managing labor migration through state intervention. The study recommends greater State involvement as intermediary between- worker and employer in order to protect, promote and guard labor rights of migrants, while it guarantees a fair balance between the supply and demand for foreign labor.
