dc.description.abstract | Abstract. This article theorizes the functional relationship between the human components (i.e., scholars) and non-human components (i.e., structural configurations) of academic domains. It is organized around the following question: in what ways have scholars formed and been formed by the structural configurations of their academic domain? The article uses as a case study the academic domain of education and technology to examine this question. Its authorship approach is innovative, with a worldwide collection of academics (99 authors) collaborating to address the proposed question based on their reflections on daily social and academic practices. This collaboration followed a three-round process of contributions via email. Analysis of these scholars’ reflective accounts was carried out, and a theoretical proposition was established from this analysis. The proposition is of a mutual (yet not necessarily balanced) power (and therefore political) relationship between the human and non-human constituents of an academic realm, with the two shaping one another. One implication of this proposition is that these non-human elements exist as political ‘actors’, just like their human counterparts, having ‘agency’ – which they exercise over humans. This turns academic domains into political (functional or dysfunctional) ‘battlefields’ wherein both humans and non-humans engage in political activities and actions that form the identity of the academic domain. | |

Este artículo teoriza la relación funcional entre los componentes humanos (es decir, los académicos) y los componentes no humanos (es decir, las configuraciones estructurales) de los ámbitos académicos. Se organiza en torno a la siguiente pregunta: ¿de qué manera los académicos han formado y han sido formados por las configuraciones estructurales de su ámbito académico? El artículo utiliza como estudio de caso el ámbito académico de la educación y la tecnología para examinar esta cuestión. Su enfoque de autoría es innovador, con una colección mundial de académicos (99 autores) que colaboran para abordar la cuestión propuesta a partir de sus reflexiones sobre las prácticas sociales y académicas cotidianas. Esta colaboración siguió un proceso de tres rondas de contribuciones por correo electrónico. Se analizaron los relatos reflexivos de estos académicos y, a partir de este análisis, se estableció una propuesta teórica. Se trata de una relación de poder (y, por tanto, política) mutua (aunque no necesariamente equilibrada) entre los componentes humanos y no humanos de un ámbito académico, en la que ambos se moldean mutuamente. Una de las implicaciones de esta proposición es que estos elementos no humanos existen como «actores» políticos, al igual que sus homólogos humanos, y tienen «agencia», que ejercen sobre los humanos. Esto convierte los ámbitos académicos en «campos de batalla» políticos (funcionales o disfuncionales) en los que tanto humanos como no humanos participan en actividades y acciones políticas que conforman la identidad del ámbito académico. | |
