siglo XXI.
The problem that was addressed in this research is that the Dominican Republic has a remarkable performance of its tourism sector. However, the bulk of the current tourism model is exclusionary, polluting and limiting to development. Faced with a global scenario where tourism has been migrating towards practices oriented towards sustainability, the country must align its tourism industry towards this model. Therefore, the purpose of the research is to quantify statistically the level of positive influence of tourism for the Dominican Republic. Also, determine how the main concepts related to sustainable development can be applied to the tourism industry. Likewise, to establish which are the most viable alternatives to diversify the Dominican tourist offer. The methodology used in the research was of qualitative-quantitative nature and the inductive method was used. The techniques implemented in this investigation were documentary and field research. As a result of the investigation, it was verified that the statistical data reveal that the favorable evolution of the main tourist indicators confirms its contribution to the Dominican economic dynamism, although this is observable only in aggregate form. On the other hand, it was determined that the principles of sustainable development are coupled with tourism to the extent that the latter develops in an atmosphere of respect for the environment, involving communities and with the least possible negative impact. Finally, it was established that the tourism diversification options proposed must respond more effectively to the preferences of the tourist of the 21st century
