Un traductor desconocido: Ricardo Fernández Guardia: un estudio histórico-traductológico de su obra

Abstract

Este estudio gira en torno a la labor traductológica de Ricardo Fernández Guardia en la antología Costa Rica en el siglo XIX1, recopilada y traducida por este costarricense durante el primer cuarto del siglo XX. El primer capítulo contiene el estado de la cuestión. El segundo apartado explora el contexto sociocultural de Costa Rica en esa época y brinda algunas explicaciones de estas traducciones a la luz de la Teoría de los Polisistemas de Even-Zohar. Además, incluye el legado traductológico de Fernández Guardia hallado en diversos documentos. La tercera sección analiza el estilo de las traducciones de Fernández Guardia, donde se explora la «fidelidad» y visibilidad en las anotaciones al pie de página. Asimismo, la monografía concluye con una serie de hallazgos sobre la traducción en Costa Rica, en especial, sobre el quehacer del traductor como agente histórico dentro de la sociedad. Se anexa las características contextuales de Costa Rica en el siglo XIX, que incluyen comparaciones entre el texto fuente y el traducido, así como un listado de documentos escritos por este autor, clasificado por áreas y años de publicación.This study revolves around the translatological work of Ricardo Fernández Guardia in the anthology Costa Rica in the 19th century1, compiled and translated by this Costa Rican during the first quarter of the 20th century. The first chapter contains the state of the question. The second section explores the socio-cultural context of Costa Rica at that time and provides some explanations of these translations in the light of Even-Zohar's Theory of Polysystems. It also includes the translatological legacy of Fernández Guardia found in various documents. The third section analyzes the style of Fernández Guardia's translations, where the "fidelity" and visibility in the footnotes are explored. Likewise, the monograph concludes with a series of findings on translation in Costa Rica, especially on the translator's work as a historical agent within society. Contextual characteristics of Costa Rica in the 19th century are appended, including comparisons between the source text and the translated text, as well as a list of documents written by this author, classified by areas and years of publication.
