Resumen
Este artículo analiza la evolución de la fertilidad de los suelos de la Depresión Tectónica Central, conocida como el Valle Central de Costa Rica. Desde las primeras siembras cafeteras, ocurridas en la segunda década del siglo XIX, hasta finales del decenio de 1870, la caficultura se desarrolló sin poner en práctica obras de ingeniería, métodos de cultivo y cambios en el uso del suelo. Sin embargo, todo empezó a cambiar a raíz de la crisis de 1878, primero empezó con la aplicación de abonos orgánicos, luego los nutrientes químicos y a finales de la centuria con la implementación de nuevas prácticas agrícolas. El análisis es sustentado en una lectura de de múltiples fuentes como periódicos, revistas agrícolas, informes de la Sociedad Nacional de Agricultura y Departamento de Agricultura. A la vez, hace una exploración a las primeras investigaciones y experimentaciones de uso de abonos.
