Guía para el manejo de las formas verbales de Inglés y de Español al traducir fenómenos sociales basado en el libro Taking form, making worlds : Cartonera Publishers in Latin America

Abstract

La memoria de traducción de este trabajo de graduación tiene como tema principal el análisis traductológico de los verbos presentes en los capítulos 1 y 2 del libro Taking Form, Making Worlds: Cartonera Publishers in Latin America. Dicho análisis se enfoca en tres formas verbales: la voz pasiva, el gerundio-progresivo y el subjuntivo; aunque también se desarrolla un contraste general entre los 12 tiempos verbales en inglés (Walden University) y los 17 tiempos verbales en español (RAE, 2005) para presentar una guía de equivalencias verbales más completa. Se utilizó un enfoque cuantitativo para medir la cantidad de apariciones de las estructuras verbales mencionadas anteriormente y se prosiguió con un enfoque cualitativo al seleccionar diferentes ejemplos para contrastar las versiones de inglés y de español para encontrar factores diferenciadores y puntos en común. Tras obtener resultados principalmente en la parte cualitativa, se concluye que el uso de la voz pasiva es válido en español pero de manera más restringida que en inglés; que el progresivo en inglés representa una estructura completa de formación verbal en los tres tiempos con amplio uso pero que para el gerundio en español la misma estructura correspondería solamente a una perífrasis del gerundio con un uso restringido a algo que está aconteciendo en este momento; y del subjuntivo en español que su equivalente más cercano y aplicable está dentro de las formas perfectas en inglés.

The main theme of this graduation thesis's translation memory is the translation analysisof the verbs found in chapters 1 and 2 of the book Taking Form, MakingWorlds: Cartonera Publishers in Latin America. This analysis focuses on three verb forms: the passive voice, the progressive gerund, and the subjunctive; although it also develops ageneral contrast between the 12 verb tenses in English (Walden University) and the 17 verb tensesin Spanish (RAE, 2005) to present a more complete guide to verbal equivalences. A quantitative approach was used to measure the number of occurrences of the verbal structures mentioned above, followed by a qualitative approach toselect different examples to contrast the English and Spanish versions in order tofind differentiating factors and commonalities. After obtaining results mainly in the qualitative part, it is concluded that the use of the passive voice is valid in Spanish but in a more restricted way than in English; that the progressive in English represents a complete structure of verbal formation in the three tenses with wide use, but that for the gerund in Spanish the same structure would correspond only to a periphrasis of the gerund with a use restricted to something that is happening at this moment; and that the closest and most applicable equivalent of the subjunctive in Spanish is found within the perfect forms in English.
