This research focuses on the identity construction process among young people who declare themselves fans of manga and anime (otakus). This passion leads them to take references and develop complex dynamics of interaction, consumption, and identification, making this topic a social phenomenon of emerging identities, characteristic of contemporary society. At a theoretical level, the phenomenon is viewed through social representations. These representations are also used to execute the methodological approach, where information regarding the social phenomenon of otaku cultural identity is collected and analyzed, as well as how it impacts people's identities. The paper explores the ways in which cultural objects (anime and manga) are accessed (interacted with and consumed); the selection of identity references extracted from these objects to cement identity at levels of unity and uniqueness; and the production of a representational discourse that defines social subjects as bearers of a cultural identity as otakus. and finally, the germination of social practices through which individuals express themselves and project themselves into the reality in which they position themselves. Concluding with some important findings regarding the dynamics of this social phenomenon and its relevance to Costa Rican society, without neglecting its significance in the lives of the young people involved.
