Surgery is the branch of medicine that includes manual or instrumental procedures with a therapeutic purpose. Surgery is as old as agriculture and domestic animal husbandry, and over the years it has had a great scientific boom. Currently it can be divided into three large groups: soft tissues, orthopedics and neurosurgery. The aim of the present work was to develop skills for surgical decision making, management during the surgical stages of the patient and critical thinking to face emergency situations and surgical complications, through clinical practice and case participation. The data obtained from the HEMS population were analyzed through descriptive statistics. An internship in soft tissue surgery was performed at the Hospital de Especies Menores y Silvestres of the Universidad Nacional, Heredia, Costa Rica from July 31 to September 22, 2023. Where the idea was participated in all the soft tissue procedures performed, whether in the pre-surgical, trans-surgical or post-surgical period. During this period, the student participated in the surgeries of 126 patients, of which 100 (79.37%) were canines, 17 (13.50%) felines, two (1.59%) iguanas (Iguana iguana), two (1, 59%) rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), two (1.59%) chickens (Gallus gallus), one (0.79%) turtle (Trachemys scripta), one (0.79%) rat (Rattus norvegicus) and one (0.79%) Russian hamster (Phodopus sungorus). The most frequently intervened system was the reproductive system with 48 surgeries (31.58%), followed by tegumentary with 43 (28.29%). The main procedures performed during the internship were OVH with 34 (22.37%) and removal of skin neoplasms with 21 (13.82%).
