This article deals with the practice of Applied History at the School of History, National University, Costa Rica. Based on the author's research experience in Agrarian History and Rural Development projects, he discusses the role of the historian in interdisciplinary projects that require a relationship with other scientists, communities, and determined social actors. It points out that the concept "Applied History" carries an adjective that has the function of an intentional reiteration. History can be applied in different ways or modalities. The range of options is wide and includes from the use of historical knowledge to implement organic farming systems with local varieties in the present, to the historiographic interpretation of a past, with the aim of recreating a national or regional identity and legitimizing thus a power system. Knowledge is potentially applicable according to what you want to see. When speaking of Applied History in this article, it is done with the knowledge of the previous principle, with the warning that it is the recount of an experience that arose in a specific historical and historiographic context. That is to say, of the one that arose from the postgraduate plan attached to the School of History of the National University, consolidated in the second half of the 1990s, with origins traceable from the second half of the 1970s and the 1980s. The principle of intentionality is associated, in this case, with a research tradition that revolved around agrarian social issues, which found in the concept of Applied History a way to express its interest in approaching rural-social actors in general-, not only as a practice of delivery of results, but rather, through the approach of research problems that arise from common agendas or from the contrast of differentiated agendas. Applied History is, essentially, History and therefore it should not renounce what has turned it into a discipline that analyzes and explains from critical and scientific means of validation. But that also considers the current debate on the limits of the neopositivist explanation as a context pressure that demands the reconsideration of the quality of the data and its interpretation, taking into account the appropriation and the community validation as legitimate evaluative actions. It is History with an adjective, nothing more, but nothing less.
