The original, globally known definition of sustainable development is “one that meets today’s needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs” (WCED, 1987). Nevertheless, the concept from the beginning has raised recurrent criticism, either because of its ambiguity or being built by the central countries. On the other hand, sustainable tourism has also been criticized for its ambiguity and contradictions. In the case of Costa Rica is one of the activities that generates more foreign exchange in the economy and its importance is such that it has gradually gained more importance than traditional products such as bananas and coffee. However, sustainable tourism in Costa Rica is still an activity with its controversies, criticisms and ambiguities.
