Patricia Fumero Vargas : el teatro en la Universidad de Costa Rica (1950-2012)

Abstract

El teatro en la Universidad de Costa Rica (1950-2012), de Patricia Fumero Vargas, se refiere –como lo indica claramente su título al teatro que nació y se ha desarrollado en esta institución de enseñanza superior costarricense. Sin embargo, debe acotarse desde el principio que, dado el papel central que esta universidad ha jugado en la historia contemporánea del país, su discurrir está siempre en continua intersección e interrelación con lo que ha ido sucediendo a través de los años en la escena nacional. Es este el primer punto que resalta de la lectura del libro: el que tiene que ver con el relevamiento consciente del papel de la Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR). En este sentido, la autora consigna cómo, allá por la década de 1950, esta universidad fue el motor central de las políticas culturales que se impulsaban en el país. Esto no es de extrañar, porque nos encontrábamos ante un Estado que se hallaba en proceso de armar el aparato que le permitiría impulsar el proyecto político que quienes habían salido ganadores del conflicto que había conocido su culminación en la Guerra Civil de 1948. Esa reestructuración que implicó pasar por una Asamblea Nacional Constituyente en un contexto conflictivo, el cual no terminó en 1948, originó que en los sectores políticamente dominantes prevaleciera un ambiente que Alberto Cañas resume en una frase, en el marco de una entrevista que le hice en 1993, “al país se lo está llevando el diablo, no hay tiempo de cantar”

Theater at the University of Costa Rica (1950-2012), by Patricia Fumero Vargas, refersas its title clearly indicatesto the theater that was born and developed at this Costa Rican institution of higher education. However, it should be noted from the outset that, given the central role this university has played in the country's contemporary history, its development is always in continuous intersection and interrelation with what has been happening over the years on the national scene. This is the first point that stands out from reading the book: the one that has to do with the conscious examination of the role of the University of Costa Rica (UCR). In this sense, the author notes how, back in the 1950s, this university was the central driving force behind the cultural policies being promoted in the country. This is not surprising, because we were faced with a State that was in the process of assembling the apparatus that would allow it to promote the political project of those who had emerged victorious from the conflict that had culminated in the Civil War of 1948. This restructuring, which involved going through a National Constituent Assembly in a conflictive context, which did not end in 1948, caused an atmosphere to prevail in the politically dominant sectors that Alberto Cañas summarized in a phrase, in the framework of an interview I did with him in 1993, "the country is being taken by the devil, there is no time to sing."
