The way value chains operate is partially affected/determined by the lattice of rules in the environments where they are located. Value chains are global, national or regional4 interact with this environment, which is called in this document: institutional. The way they operate has to do not only with the productive characteristics of chains, but also with the characteristics of the environments in which they operate. As the chains extend into different physical and social spaces, the productive results are imbued in the performance of the productive actors, the results of such interaction.
