The rock coast of South and Central America

Abstract

The great variety of climatic conditions, tidal ranges and wave regimes of South and Central America act on a complex geology and tectonic framework. Many of the rock and cliffed coasts of South America are strongly controlled by the occurrence of extensive Cenozoic and Pleistocene sediments that crop out at the coast. Geology and the different uplift rates are a major factor inthe whole coastal geomorphology of South and Central America, and consequently are a very important control of the processes andlandforms of rock coasts. This chapter covers several aspects of the rock coast of South and Central America, with special attention to the combination of tectonic movements and Quaternary Pleistocene–Holocene sea-level changes

La gran variedad de condiciones climáticas, rangos de mareas y regímenes de olas de América del Sur y Central actúan sobre un complejo marco geológico y tectónico. Muchas de las costas rocosas y acantiladas de América del Sur están fuertemente controladas por la aparición de extensos sedimentos del Cenozoico y el Pleistoceno que afloran en la costa. La geología y las diferentes tasas de elevación son un factor importante en toda la geomorfología costera de América del Sur y Central y, en consecuencia, son un control muy importante de los procesos y formas de relieve de las costas rocosas. Este capítulo cubre varios aspectos de la costa rocosa de América del Sur y Central, con especial atención a la combinación de movimientos tectónicos y cambios en el nivel del mar del Pleistoceno-Holoceno Cuaternario.
