Frequently, the recovery of extensive degraded areas requires prioritizing work sectors. Wetlands in the Frío River basin (Alajuela, Costa Rica) provide a variety of ecosystem services, but excessive amounts of sediment enter them as a consequence of the removal of forest cover in the basin. In order to increase the effectiveness of a potential conservation strategy in the basin, priority sites for ecological restoration were determined through spatial multicriteria analysis. The priority sites are located in the upper part of the basin and cover approximately 16 21 1 ha. Only 2% of such area is protected by the Forest Law (no 7575). The land of the priority sites is predominantly used for ranching. 92% of the area covered by the priority sites is located in the Río La Muerte, Río Cote and Río El Muerto sub-basins. The proximity of the priority sites to each other would make it easier to maximize the use of economic resources and personnel in an eventual ecological restoration project.
