Paisajes y laberintos de la memoria (sobre la poesía contemporánea en Centroamérica)

Abstract

La idea de Centroamérica nació en la segunda mitad del siglo XVI, con la fundación de la Capitanía General de Guatemala. Aunque dependía nominalmente del Virreinato de Nueva España, México después, el «Reyno de Guatemala» logró a lo largo del tiempo una relativa autonomía. Fue una difícil unidad administrativa colonial que sobrevivió hasta la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, cuando las pequeñas provincias se separaron y se conviflieron en repúblicas. Lo que al principio fue una división administrativa ordenada por la Corona española, se convirtió con el tiempo en una realidad geopolítica, y hasta nuestros días en una región de cultura mestiza e historia común. Más que su brevedad geográfica, lo más visible de estos países es su debilidad y dependencia frente a los otros, sean sus vecinos, sus mentores o los grandes centros del poder político y económico. El vaivén entre Ja unidad política y su separación ha marcado la vida de esta región, sus instituciones jurídicas, sus hábitos sociales y, naturalmente, su evolución cultural. No hay que olvidar que a aquella pequeña familia de repúblicas —entre ellas se llaman con mucha frecuencia hermanas, resabio sin duda de una siempre añorada unidad— se han sumado en el siglo XX, dos nuevos miembros: Panamá (formalmente independiente en 1903), y desde 1981 Belice, la antigua posesión británica donde conviven como lenguas de todos los días el inglés y el español.

The idea of ​​Central America was born in the second half of the 16th century, with the founding of the Captaincy General of Guatemala. Although it nominally depended on the Viceroyalty of New Spain, later Mexico, the "King of Guatemala" achieved relative autonomy over time. It was a difficult colonial administrative unit that survived until the second half of the 19th century, when the small provinces separated and became republics. What at first was an administrative division ordered by the Spanish Crown, over time became a geopolitical reality, and to this day a region of mestizo culture and common history. More than their geographical brevity, the most visible thing about these countries is their weakness and dependence on others, whether their neighbors, their mentors or the great centers of political and economic power. The swing between political unity and its separation has marked the life of this region, its legal institutions, its social habits and, naturally, its cultural evolution. We must not forget that two new members have been added to that small family of republics - among them they frequently call each other sisters, undoubtedly a remnant of an always longed-for unity - in the 20th century: Panama (formally independent in 1903), and since 1981 Belize, the former British possession where English and Spanish coexist as everyday languages.
