The objective of this study was to identify the beliefs, attitudes and values that the inhabitants of the districts of San Antonio, Quebrada Honda and La Mansión of the canton of Nicoya, Guanacaste have towards the wetlands, in order to propose criteria that allow the elaboration of a strategy of sustainable use of them. A total of 210 people selected from a random sample were interviewed, of which 51% were women and 49% men. The results show how the majority of the inhabitants are aware of what are the main causes, and responsible for the deterioration suffered by these ecosystems. Among the main reasons they identify deforestation, garbage and agrochemicals and consequently point out the loggers, farmers and mainly the uneducated or conscientious human being as the main responsible for causing the deterioration of wetlands. They also agree that the main consequences of these changes are: that there is less water availability and fewer animals, and that there is more heat and more dust.
