This paper begins with a brief overview of the early struggles of Costa Rican women to achieve their right to citizenship. Through these struggles, women freed themselves from their condition of representative dependence to assume self-representative citizenship. Second, it refers to international instruments on women's human rights, which served as the basis for national legislation on women's issues. Third, it highlights the civil and electoral legal framework that has positioned women as active participants in the practice of human rights over the last six decades, allowing them to become involved and participate in the construction of the country's future. Finally, the economic and political performance of women in contemporary Costa Rican society is addressed.
