Cuidados transquirúrgicos en animales silvestres

Abstract

El presente trabajo de graduación se llevó a cabo en el Wildlife Center de Virginia (WCV) y en el National Zoological Park (NZP), Estados Unidos. En ambos centros se evaluó el uso de anestesia para procedimientos como toma de radiografías y muestras de sangre, examen físico, rehabilitación pasiva y cirugía. En el WCV se observó un total de 239 casos, de los cuales 102 eran aves, 116 mamíferos y 21 reptiles. Del total de aves atendidas, se usó anestesia inhalatoria en 80 casos, de los cuales en 60 fue para procedimientos diagnósticos y en 20 para cirugía. La inducción y mantenimiento fueron realizados con Isoflurano. En el caso de los reptiles, se anestesiaron 6 animales, para toma de radiografías y 4 cirugías, utilizando anestésicos inyectables para la inducción e inhalatorio para el mantenimiento. En ambas especies se usó Doppler de flujo para monitoreo de función cardiaca y ventilación positiva para asistencia en la respiración durante anestesia. En la segunda parte de la pasantía, realizada en el NZP, se observaron 52 casos que correspondieron a 29 mamíferos, 15 aves, 6 reptiles y 2 anfibios. Se utilizó anestesia solamente en mamíferos (2 primates, 3 felinos y 1 nutria), para examen general antes de cuarentena (1 caso), chequeo anual (2 casos), gastroscopía (1 caso), y cirugía de tejidos blandos (2 casos). En todos los casos se usaron jaulas de contención para poder administrar la primera dosis de anestesia y después Isoflurano para mantenimiento. La recuperación fue realizada en jaula bajo supervisión.

This graduation project was carried out at the Wildlife Center of Virginia (WCV) and at the National Zoological Park (NZP), United States. In both institutions, the use of anesthesia was evaluated for procedures such as radiographic examination, blood collection, routine exams, physical therapy and surgery. At the WCV a total of 239 cases were seen, 102 birds, 116 mammals and 21 reptiles. Anesthesia was used in 80 of the avian patients, of these 60 were anesthetized for diagnostic procedures and the remaining 20 were anesthetized for surgery. Isoflurane was used in every patient for induction and maintenance of anesthesia. For the reptile patients, only 6 animals were anesthetized for radiographs and 4 surgeries, using inyectable anesthetics for induction and gas for maintenance. A Doppler device was used in both species for monitoring of heart function and IVPP for respiratory assistance during anesthesia. In the second part of the externship, at the NZP, 52 cases were seen, distributed in 29 mammals, 15 birds, 6 reptiles and 2 amphibians. Anesthesia was used only with mammals, 2 primates, 3 felines and 1 otter, for quarantine exam (1), annual checkup (2), endoscopy (1) and soft tissue surgery (2). Cages were used in all the cases for delivery of the first dose of anesthesia and then Isoflurane for maintenance. Recovery from anesthesia took place in a cage under supervision.
