Resumen
Se realizó una pasantía de diez semanas que se llevo a cabo en los hospitales equinos:
“Brazos Valley Equine Hospital” (cinco semanas) en “Navasota”, Texas, USA, y “Desert
Pines Equine Medical & Surgical Center” (cinco semanas) en las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Se
trabajó principalmente en las áreas de clínica, cirugía y medicina interna en ambos hospitales.
Se presenciaron las consultas de medicina interna, emergencias, cirugía, evaluaciones
reproductivas, se participó activamente en los tratamientos y monitoreo que requerían los
pacientes, se estuvo presente durante las cirugías realizadas y en las discusiones de la mayoría
de los casos. Además, se acudió a numerosas visitas a campo y se trabajó en conjunto con el
personal de ambos hospitales.
En “Brazos Valley Equine Hospital” se atendieron durante la pasantía 1202 pacientes
equinos que se presentaron en el hospital siendo: ultrasonido para determinar el momento del
ciclo estral 15,2%, exámenes ortopédicos 8,9% y infiltración de articulaciones 7,2% los
motivos de consulta más frecuentes; y 256 en visitas a campo en las cuales la terapia de ondas
de choque 18,4%, vacunas 15,6% y pasaje de plasma en potros 9,8% fueron los más
frecuentes.
En “Desert Pines Equine Medical & Surgical Center” se trabajó con 617 pacientes
equinos que se presentaron en el centro médico siendo: ultrasonido para determinar el
momento del ciclo estral 16,9%, exámenes ortopédicos 11,2% y vacunas 7,3% los motivos de
consulta más frecuentes; y 580 en visitas a campo en las cuales las vacunas 20,7%,
certificados de salud 11,9% y prueba de “Coggins” 11% fueron los más frecuentes.
A ten weeks externship was accomplished on two equine hospitals: Brazos Valley Equine Hospital (five weeks) in Navasota, Texas, USA, and Desert Pines Equine Medical & Surgical Center (five weeks) in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. During the externship different activities were performed, for example being present during the internal medicine consults, emergencies, surgery, reproductive consults and procedures, collaboration with the treatments and daily monitoring of patients, participation on the discussion of the cases. Also, part of the practice consisted on the attention of numerous field visits and working in conjunction with staff at both hospitals.
