Among the consequences of climate change are the rise in sea level, the arrival of waters from sources such as melted ice from glaciers and the polar caps, the decrease in size of glaciers on the five continents and the thermal expansion of ocean water. As the temperature of the ocean waters increases and the seas become less dense, they will expand, occupying a larger surface area. An increase in temperature will accelerate the rate of rise in sea level, the decrease of river flow, greater solar radiation, the disappearance of species extremely sensitive to changes in temperature, and, in humans, the increase in diseases such as skin cancer. In Costa Rica, the effects of climate change could be prolonged droughts, floods, greater runoff, more damaging hurricanes, more washed-out sediments that will increase flooding problems, loss of coastal zone due to rising ocean levels, decrease in the size of forests altitude normally cold and disappearance of species that inhabit them.
