This paper attempts to highlight the tensions that characterized the development of honey production in Costa Rica, particularly its competition with sugar production and consumption, pest control, and deforestation. To this end, it draws on the analysis of agricultural journals, articles published on the subject, as well as statistical yearbooks and agricultural censuses from the period. The article begins with a brief overview of the emergence of beekeeping in Costa Rica and then delves into the characterization of this activity in the first half of the 20th century. It then analyzes the main challenges faced by beekeeping since the 1940s, such as the fight against pests like locusts and the impact of the arrival of Africanized bees in the 1980s, and concludes with some insights into the current situation in the context of climate change.
