Ecosistemas Nuevos: Definición, Controversias y Desafíos

Abstract

Resumen. El concepto de "ecosistemas nuevos", "novel ecosystems" o neoecosistemas, ha sido objeto de un intenso debate en la comunidad científica. Este término, acuñado recientemente, hace referencia a aquellos ecosistemas que han sido significativamente alterados por actividades humanas, generando nuevas combinaciones de especies y procesos ecológicos que difieren de aquellos existentes en el pasado (Higgs, 2017). Sin embargo, aún no existe un consenso sobre en qué momento un ecosistema debe ser considerado como "nuevo" y si esta categoría debe ser adoptada de manera oficial en la ciencia de la restauración ecológica.Abstract. The concept of “novel ecosystems” or neoecosystems has been the subject of intense debate in the scientific community. This term, coined recently, refers to those ecosystems that have been significantly altered by human activities, generating new combinations of species and ecological processes that differ from those existing in the past (Higgs, 2017). However, there is still no consensus on at what point an ecosystem should be considered “new” and whether this category should be officially adopted in ecological restoration science.
