The agenda of higher education institutions necessarily involves a profound social concern, in order to establish significant connections with the contextual reality in which the academia is inserted (Brennan, 2008, p. 384-385). Social outreach work in higher education occurs not only as a way to fulfill a statutory commitment, but it is a strategic mission, to exist and coexist in space and time, as an integral part of a social whole that demands involvement. At Universidad Nacional, Brunca Extension (UNA, SRB), a specific project seeks to establish social outreach through sharing knowledge and direct relationships between the students and the community. Through service participation, a project called Cursos Participativos (CP) involves annually about twelve students of various majors as volunteer instructors. Every January, CP offers a variety of workshops and modules on various topics. The main objective of this study is to show the impact of CP as a promoter of social awareness and student voluntary work. Because of its qualitative nature, this study explores students’ experiences in service participation as a mechanism to better understand the social work at UNA, SRB, and determine, at least partially, how aware of its surrounding reality this institution is.
