The Productive Museum Model, presented here as a working proposal for existing museums, was generated from the experiences obtained through the development of an extension pro-ject of the National University in Costa Rica, to establish a Museum of Popular Culture. This museum develops the traditional activities of rescue, research and dissemination and incor-porates the identification and support to the popular cultures, the creative individuals who pos-sess and manage the traditional knowledge of their community, transmitting it through their concrete creative practice. The Museum of Popular Culture set out to open a new path: Would it be possible to facilitate or stimulate a productive reactivation of some traditions, practices and crafts, keeping them alive within the communities themselves? Would it be possible to open new markets, apply group organization techniques, family businesses, cooperatives, marketing, etc. to restore profitability, viability and dignity to artisans and individuals with knowledge of traditional techniques? The experiences developed by the Museum of Popular Culture in the search for an appropriate methodology, analyzing existing structures of traditional museums, sharing the experiences of colleagues, testing and trying new museum techniques, have taken ten years of work. Many decisions were made along the way. Perhaps the most important was the desire to create a reproducible model, initially, within the limits of our thematic area of Popular Culture; a model that would allow us to apply the same techniques in other areas of Latin America facing similar problems. But little by little the vision was broadened, and we wondered what impact the emerging methodology could have in other contexts and themes, in order to increase and enrich the valuable work that museums do worldwide. Our current interest is to share this work proposal that presents significant alternatives for exist-ing museums, based on a vision and mission of the museum in society in projection towards the 21st century.
