The use of techniques for the reproductive management of canines has become more important during the past few years. Therefore, this externship was carried out in order to improve the student´s knowledge in this area. The externship was developed in the Clínica de Reproducción Canina de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and the private clinic Sanatorio Animal, during a period of nine weeks. It included the estrus cycle follow up in 165 bitches, in which ovulation moment was estimated by serum progesterone measurements and vaginal cytology. It was carried out artificial insemination in 30 cases: 15 intravaginal and 15 intrauterine. Furthermore, ultrasonographic evaluation of 38 mated bitches was carried out; pregnancy was confirmed by this mean in 30 of them. Besides, semen was collected from 35 males, and semen freezing was accomplished in six occasions. It was performed 21 caesarean sections, which included six procedures considered as emergencies. The birth of 84 puppies was assisted, with a mortality rate of 9.5%, and neonatal care of 49 puppies from 12 litters was assisted. The veterinary training in reproductive techniques is crucial for an appropriate guidance of canine reproduction. By this way, the accomplishment of this externship improved the experience and knowledge on monitoring and enhancing procedures related to the reproductive and gestational performance, as well as the neonatal health of canines used for reproductive purposes and moreover, ensuring their welfare.
