The history of plantation agriculture in tropical and subtropical America is fundamental to understanding the processes of settlement and development of the continent. It was primarily the commercial activities of these plantations that fueled three centuries of the slave trade, with the forced displacement of approximately 10 million Black people from Africa to the Americas. This process resulted, in various parts of Latin America and the Caribbean, in a distinctly African biological makeup and a culture that represents a blend of elements from three continents.
