Due to lack of information about many species of wildlife, especially the family Xenarthra, a study was conducted on hematological and plasma chemistry of the species Bradypus variegatus and Choloepus hoffmanni free living in the north of Costa Rica , throughout the months of march 2009 to February 2010 . We collected blood samples from clinically healthy individuals, 67 animals for hematology: 40 individuals of C. hoffmanni (17 females, 18 males, 5 unsexed, 11 juveniles, 29 adults) and 27 individuals of B. variegatus (14 females, 11 males, 2 unsexed; 2 juveniles, 25 adults), while for the chemical plasma samples were processed 58, 33 for C. hoffmanni (17 females, 15 males, 1 unsexed, 3 juveniles, 30 adults) and B. variegatus 25 individuals (15 females, 9 males, 1 unsexed, 25 adults). The mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, median, minimum and maximum were calculated for 11 hematological values and 10 plasma metabolites. Some of the established reference values were: haematocrit 31% - 38% for both species, haemoglobin 8.6 - 10.5g/dl for C. hoffmanni and 9.0 - 11.4 g/dl for B. variegatus, whereas the leucocyte count was set at 4400.0 – 11450.0 µl and 3550.0 - 8600.0 µl, respectively. Total proteins 6.1 - 7.5 g/dl and 6.7 - 8.0 g/dl, glucose 46 - 70mg/dl and 60 - 101 mg/dl, AST 53 – 92 UI/L and 155 – 225 UI/L, for C. hoffmanni and B. variegatus. We performed a comparison between the values obtained for both species.
