spp, mientras que en dos de estas se observó Skrjabinema ovis y en una Trichuris spp.;
According to Chacon and Boschini (2016) the caprine and ovine production in Costa Rica has been increasing, therefore the importance of sources of information about the small ruminants population’s state in different areas of the country. Due to this, the present study was carried out to evaluate the hematological and coprological parameters in 36 sheep and 49 goats, distributed in five farms of the Metropolitan Area located in San Isidro - Heredia, La Uruca, Coronado and Agua Caliente - Cartago. Individuals with no apparent clinical signs were chosen, each animal was submited to a general physical examination, measurement of the color of mucous membranes using FAMACHA© technique, complete blood count with smear analysis in search of hemoparasites, and coprological examination by Sheather technique, McMaster and coproculture. Among the findings, some deviations were observed outside the ratio of FAMACHA©’s standard assessment, also low hematocrit levels in some farms, and morphological deviations in erythrocytes and leucocytes. The presence of Anaplasma spp. was observed in all the visited farms, while Babesia spp. or Theileria spp. were present in only three of them. All farms resulted positive to gastrointestinal parasites, where the majority were those of the strongylide family, in three of the farms Eimeria spp was found, while in two of them Skrjabinema ovis was observed, and in one Trichuris spp.; through coproculture of samples, Haemonchus contortus larvae species were identified. This study is useful to strengthen knowledge of laboratory techniques for the processing of hematological and coprological samples and their interpretation, meanwhile generating updated information, useful for people with affinity for these issues and current situation of these farms.
