Desarrollo sostenible: el gran reto para el próximo milenio

Abstract

Nos acercamos a la finalización de un milenio conformado por grandes logros, pero también por frustraciones, e impactado por el surgimiento y decadencia de imperios y pueblos. En su transcurso hemos visto incrementarse el conocimiento que los seres humanos tenemos de la naturaleza y de nosotros mismos.

Un primer vistazo nos hace sentir cómodos al ingresar en el próximo milenio con un buen bagaje de tecnología y de conocimientos. Esto podría permitir suponer que contamos con una excelente base para un desarrollo posterior. Esa actitud puede ser aún más optimista cuando comprobamos que en los últimos sesenta años el desarrollo ha sido exponencial y vertiginoso. Podríamos creer que, siguiendo esa trayectoria, el progreso sería ilimitado.

We are nearing the end of a millennium made up of great achievements, but also frustrations, and impacted by the rise and decline of empires and peoples. In its course we have seen an increase in the knowledge that human beings have of nature and of ourselves.

A first glance makes us feel comfortable entering the next millennium with a good background of technology and knowledge. This could lead to the assumption that we have an excellent basis for further development. That attitude can be even more optimistic when we verify that in the last sixty years development has been exponential and vertiginous. We could believe that, following that path, progress would be unlimited.
