Since 1996, with the optional course of the COCERP nucleus "Contribution of the Elderly Adult", the initial seed that gave rise to the university extension project Programa de Atención Integral de la Persona Adulta Mayor (PAIPAM), of the Center for General Studies, the student population has participated in different extension actions. Since its inception in 2000, PAIPAM was formulated as an integrated project (extension, research, teaching and production) and the accompaniment of students has been vital and strengthening in 22 years of existence. Given the theme of the Program, the main population has been the elderly, however, work has also been done from the life course with other age groups. Some of the territories in which it has been shared have been: Day Centers (Los Lagos, San Pablo, San Joaquín…), Barbacoas de Puriscal, El Guarco de Cartago, Palmichal, Tucurrique, among others. In addition, with the pandemic and virtuality, it was possible to cover other territories at a national and international level. This paper aims to show how PAIPAM since its origins has had the participation of students to develop extension in communities in various parts of the country and outside of it and the benefits of this in the professional growth of participating students. From a qualitative approach, the documentary review technique has been selected: a compilation of all the material was carried out, the documentary sources that were most relevant to our objective were selected, in this way we worked with 2 types: printed documents (reports of progress and end of the project since 2000) and graphic material (photographs). Some of the results found were: • Active and proactive participation of students in different extension actions. • Sensitization and awareness of the student population when interacting with older adults. • Exchange of knowledge and construction of intergenerational learning. • Learning and good practices of various soft, social and life skills. The most relevant conclusion is that the student population in the PAIPAM project experienced a significant approach to the national and international reality, of reciprocal awareness and generation, construction and exchange of knowledge and development of abilities and skills in a creative way. One of the challenges will be to coordinate with the communities more spaces (face-to-face and virtual) for the development of outreach actions that benefit the greater elderly population in our country and contribute to the academic development of the students who participate in said initiatives.
